Abstract
The elective induction of labor and augmentation by oxytocin in 772 patients and spontaneous labor in 569 patients have been reviewed in an attempt to appraise the safety of this procedure. The advantages are many and obvious, the disadvantages have proven to be few and insignificant. 1. The length of labor is significantly shortened by oxytocin. 2. About half of night time deliveries could be converted to day time using oxytocin. 3. The incidences of postpartum hemorrhage were similar in both groups. 4. No more compliccations were encountered in the patients using oxytocin compared to the patients with spontaneous deliveries. 5. No more frequent occurenc of prematurity in the study group was noted. 6. The incidences of depressed group of Apgar score were similar in both groups. 7. The occurence rate of hyperbilirubinemia was increased in the patients who had high doses of oxytocin. The results of the study suggest that while oxytocin in high doses should be used with caution, the benefits obtained from the active management using oxytocin in mocern obstetrics outweigh the risk which it may cause.
